Maintaining Your Success with a Freelance Routine

When things get out of hand, I am aware that my thoughts begin to stray. I might drink coffee nonstop and forgo meals if I have a full day of deadlines to meet. I might get up earlier than usual to finish an assignment before leaving if I unexpectedly need to go across town for a meeting.

Observe the 6-Hour Rule

Although it's recommended to get 8 hours of sleep each night, I stick to the 6-hour rule. This means that even if I work until after midnight, I always go to bed and get a full six hours of sleep. I always adhere to this rule. It would have to wait till after 6 in the morning, even if I had something due the next morning.

Again, for some individuals, 6 hours of sleep might not seem like enough, but I've discovered that if I get any less, I crash in the middle of the day and am unable to maintain a high level of writing work. Find your ideal sleeping time and stick to it no matter what, I implore you.

Examine email first

I exit the bedroom once I've had my beauty sleep and sit at the kitchen table with my laptop. I don't start working immediately away since, in my opinion, it's unhealthy; instead, I check my emails and catch up on the news.

It's a process of rising gradually as the day progresses that helps me get going. I give my body time to awaken and adjust, then after reading all of my messages and learning what tasks I have for the day, I head into my office and prepare myself a cup of coffee.

Take a break for lunch
During the week, I typically don't eat breakfast. However, I always stop for lunch. So I attempt to accomplish as much as I can during my first work session, which runs from 8 am until 12 pm. I begin with the most difficult item on my list, and then I cross each item off my agenda one by one. When 12 o'clock rolls around, I leave the standing desk and get some lunch.

In general, you require a noon snack to maintain your energy. Taking a break from the computer for a few minutes to eat a sandwich, some chips, or a bowl of fruit may help your brain adjust and split up your day into smaller tasks rather than one large one, especially when doing anything that requires a lot of mental work, like writing or graphic design.

Go for a run or take a nap
I finish my day with one of these two activities after lunch. Of the two, a run is undoubtedly the healthier choice, but if you're looking to recharge, a nap might be just as helpful. Basically, this is my #1 priority.

The goal is to stay awake and function the rest of the day by doing anything you can to do so. On me, that is taking a 30-minute nap or going for a 3-mile outdoor jog. I always feel happier and more at ease after either of them. I also start to get a little impatient to get up from my desk and start another work session.

Consider the Rounds, not the Whole Game.
I'm back at my computer, finishing up deadlines, and it's now around 1:30 pm. I prefer to conceive of my work in terms of rounds rather than the entire game. I perform morning and afternoon rounds, for instance. I occasionally work an afternoon and an evening shift if I skip the morning one. However, I'll perform a morning round and a night round if I have a midday audition or a meeting with a prospective customer.

It relieves tension to break up your workday into rounds rather than trying to complete everything at once. Not to mention, it provides you the freedom to do much more than just work throughout the day. You may spend time with friends, work on personal projects, and genuinely enjoy your food rather than scarfing it down quickly.

I've gone to coffee shops to work, laundromats to wait for a load of coloured wash, and Super Bowl parties to work on my laptop while seated in the back of the room. Nevertheless, independence and prosperity depend on your capacity to maintain your routine in the face of setbacks.
