6 Tips for Successful Work from Home

Looking for tips on how to work from home during the pandemic? Read this article for advice on creating a routine, staying active, maintaining connections, managing news intake, and learning new skills.

As a veteran of working from home, I understand the challenges that come with the sudden transition to remote work brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, I would wake up at 6:00 a.m., do my makeup, feed my dogs, exercise, and aim to finish work by 5:00 or 5:30. However, my routine has drastically changed since then.

As someone who works for Automattic, a company that prioritizes remote work and currently employs more than 1,100 people in 76 countries, I have been receiving inquiries from friends who are new to working from home. So, as a seasoned member of the work-from-home community, here are my tips:

  1. Be patient and gentle with yourself. These are not typical times, and adjusting to full-time remote work can be challenging. Remember that you are not alone in your struggles.
  2. Establish a routine as much as possible. Create a daily schedule and stick to it, but also be prepared for disruptions.
  3. Incorporate movement into your day. Even if you have limited options for exercising outside, there are plenty of free workouts available on YouTube for all levels of expertise.
  4. Make connections with others. Use technology to maintain your community and networks, and don’t be afraid to reach out to friends, family, and colleagues.
  5. Limit your exposure to the news. Check reliable sources no more than twice a day for a few minutes at a time to stay informed, but don’t let it consume your thoughts and emotions.
  6. Try something new. Use this time to learn a new skill or pursue a passion project, even if it’s just for a few minutes each day.

By following these tips, you can make the most of your time working from home and reduce stress and uncertainty. Remember to be kind to yourself and take things one day at a time.
